Church Woods near Canterbury

We are lucky that living where we do that there are quite a lot of different woods where we can walk although I most often end up at East Blean woods. Instead of walking where we usually do though we decided that a walk in Church Wood which is just outside Canterbury would make a nice change. We know in the past it can be good for autumnal colours too. We really are struggling with the weather being very sunny at all right now which if all those yellows and golds are to really shine out is what is needed.

We were not deterred though and it was nice to walk and enjoy the autumnal colours and for just a very brief spell the sun did make an appearance. It didn’t last too long though and soon it was cloudy once more but somehow the colours in the light really were shining out. I thought hard how I might be able to improve the pictures. One way of doing it would be to increase the vibrancy by changing the settings on your camera but I don’t always like the false colours you can get doing this. So I thought I would try changing the white balance setting on my camera to see if that helped at all. Even my mobile phone has a setting for changing the white balance when taking pictures so I know most cameras can do this but its something I never normally change on mine.

I have mine set to auto white balance normally because I take all my pictures in RAW mode and the conversion software you use to create j-pegs allows you to change the white balance at that time. On the whole I was quite pleased with the pictures I managed on what was in the end a rather dull afternoon but I think it was helped by the fact that it was so calm too so the leaves weren’t moving allowing for very long shutter speeds some were as long as 2.5 seconds. Of course with very long shutter speeds a tripod is essential but it wasn’t until I saw the pictures on the computer screen that I could see it really had worked.

I’m still hoping for some sunny weather and being able to take some autumnal pictures with some real sunshine to bring out the colours before all the leaves have fallen for another year.
