Snowdrops I was thinking just where I could go to take pictures with my new Nikon 105 Macro lens that I had been lucky enough to get for Christmas. I visited the churchyard of St. Clement's church as it's just five minutes from where we live and discovered many things that made for a lot of fun while trying to work out how the lens works at its best. One thing is for certain though, it's all about trying many different settings on the camera to see what works best and not to worry too much about all the mistakes you make along the way. This of course would have been so much harder before digital cameras came along and allowed us to check our pictures immediately. The trick is to learn from those mistakes and then remember next time just what worked, something that as you use your camera more and more gets easier. In January I visited as the first snowdrops (Galanthus) were coming into flower, and I made several visits over the next few weeks. To get the best shots of flowers you often have no choice but to get down on the ground with them. I don't usually have a problem with this at all but it did feel very odd lying down between the grave stones. I always carry a bin liner in my bag so that if the ground is too wet I'll use that which was just as well as the grass was very wet in places.
Crocuses It's a busy churchyard as people use it as a short cut on their way to and from the town centre. Most would stop for a chat with this strange woman lying on the ground wondering what on earth I was up to and were fascinated when I showed them the results on the camera. I soon discovered a churchyard has a wealth of photographic possibilities and would definitely go back again at any time of the year. I also knew after the first time I used it that I was going to be having a lot of fun with this new lens.
