A flying visit to Lancaster and Morecambe Bay

On a very quick trip to drop our youngest son off at Lancaster University we took the opportunity to have a very quick look around the City of Lancaster and then visited Morecambe Bay, somewhere I’d wanted to visit for a while. I always take my camera with me wherever I go but seeing the car was full of all the things our son needed for university there was limited room for any camera equipment and later in the day I really wished I had my tripod with me.

The city of Lancaster itself was interesting and we even found our way to the canal too but it really was only a flying visit to the city centre so no time to visit the castle on the top of the hill, which looked interesting. We had made a plan to visit Morecambe Bay too as it’s somewhere I had never been before but I’d seen lots of pictures of the vast expanse of sand. I’d also seen so many pictures of the statue of Eric Morecambe on the promenade and was keen to find that too.

We were very impressed with all the recent improvements to the promenade and I wished we had a lot longer to have a good look around and walk a lot further than we did. We were also looking for somewhere to have something to eat and in the end we ate in the bar of the recently refurbished Midland Hotel. I really like the Art Deco style of architecture and from the little we saw of the inside of the hotel it had been very thoughtfully refurbished. We certainly wished we were staying there instead of the Travelodge we had booked for the night to be close to the university.

We sat eating our fish and chips in the bar while watching the sun set over the bay. It was here I really wished I had my tripod with me so I had to make do with walls and tables to rest my camera on to prevent camera shake being a problem. I would certainly like to return there another day when we have a bit more time to spare complete with my full camera bag and tripod.
