First Bluebell of the year at East Blean Woods

Three lesser celandine together
We always enjoy walking in the woods at East Blean and I know the woods so well by now I know exactly both when and where the best of the spring flowers will be. I knew we would see plenty of Wood Anemones on our walk today but they are only just starting to flower and it will most probably be the end of April when they are at their best.

In places I was pleasantly surprised to see the first of the new leaves on the Beech trees, already quite advanced in their lovely fresh green way. The biggest surprise though was when I found a bluebell in bud and almost ready to flower: this was an exception, though because it was in a very warm spot, but later in the walk we were really surprised to find a couple already flowering. Looking closely for any more signs of flower buds there were hardly any so I think it will be a few weeks yet before I’ll be seeing the haze of blue in those woods.  Having had a quite cold winter this year I thought that the spring flowers might be later this year but when I compare today pictures from last year’s they really are about the same. I must say though, I don’t recall ever seeing a Bluebell in flower in late March.

At this time of year it’s like there is a springtime rush as the flowers quickly go through their life cycle before the new leaves on the trees above them take away all the natural sunlight. I’ll be sure to return in a couple of weeks when I would expect many more of the flowers to be showing.

I was recently given a soft focus filter and I had a play taking pictures of the Wood Anemones I think I’ll need to have another go but I quite liked the effect for the first try.
