Pink sky just before sunrise Now anyone who really knows me knows that getting up to witness the sunrise is one of the most unlikely things for me to do, even though I know that the best photographic light is at that time of the day. But while I was out taking pictures on my previous visit to Reculver I knew there was the potential for a much better looking picture of the towers from a particular spot as the sun rose, so I checked out the sunrise time for this particular day and it was 06:17, which also happened to be when low tide was so I knew I’d have no problem getting to the spot on the beach where I wanted to be.
Constantly changing colours So my alarm was set for 5.00 am and as I’d packed all my bags the night before I thought I’d easily get out by 5.30, but what I hadn’t thought of was I’d have to be scraping ice off the windscreen. It only held me up for 5 minutes and I still arrived at the car park just after 6.00 am. I was soon down on the beach just where I had planned to be and watched the various colours in the sky reflected on the wet sand as the sun rose above the horizon. It wasn't a spectacular sunrise but the constantly changing colours were fascinating to watch all the same. The particular shot I had in mind from a few days before was close to a seaweed covered water outlet pipe which really isn’t photogenic at all, but I knew that if I could slow the speed of the shot down enough by using a Neutral Density filter I might get a pleasing effect on the moving water. So, once the sun had risen enough to light up the towers, I set up my tripod and took a few photos.
Previous visit The view at Sunrise
As it was the first time I had taken any sunrise pictures it was a huge learning curve for me. The first lesson was that it is very easy to get incredibly cold. I had several layers on, plus a down jacket, hat and gloves that would have normally have kept me plenty warm enough at the temperature it was, but still I felt so cold because I wasn’t moving around very much, just standing on cold wet sand. I also learnt that to get the best colours in the sky I needed to have been there much earlier, before when the sun actually rose above the horizon.
It’s something I’ll definitely be doing again but finding suitable places so I know just where I want to be at sunrise and preferably close to where the car is parked too is my next task.
