Gusslihaus
It is always a pleasure to visit our eldest son and daughter in law James and Olivia at their home in Winterthur, Switzerland, and we visited them over a long weekend at the end of May. As well as visiting them it was going to be a very sociable weekend, because a party was going to be held for those from Olivia’s family who hadn’t been able to attend their wedding in Scotland back in February, so we were certainly looking forward to meeting Olivia’s family.

The party was held in the Gusslihaus, a venue just outside the city which is available to hire by anyone living in Winterthur.  It really is in a lovely location overlooking some orchards and rolling countryside.  At one point during the afternoon we spotted some Red Kites which are always great to see.  The party itself was a great success with a delicious BBQ and lots of dancing, and as the weather was really nice we were able to stay outside all evening too.

The next afternoon James took us for a walk into the centre of Winterthur to visit the very popular Photo Museum.  Sadly part of it was being prepared for a new exhibition but it was very interesting seeing the photographs of Marianne Breslauer, a popular photographer whose work dated between 1927 and 1938.  I think even in the days of digital cameras we can all learn something from the styles of early photographers.  Sadly I wasn’t able to take any photographs inside the exhibition so I can’t show you any of her interesting portraits and photojournalistic pictures of European cities.

James told us he’d actually never walked all the way into the city centre before as he uses the bus that stops outside the apartment every half an hour but I always enjoy seeing the details you only see at walking pace.

All too soon it was time to return home but before we had to make our way to Zurich Airport we just had time to stretch our legs and go for a walk in the woods close to where James and Olivia live.  This is a walk that goes up onto the Goldenberg, a hill offering great views over the city, and to the distant mountains as well, if only it wasn’t cloudy.

We always feel sad to leave Switzerland and hope it’s not long before we can return.
