Mid-June and we find ourselves in Wilmington, Delaware as the company Nigel works for has their head office there. I accompanied him and as it was my first visit to the United States I was really keen to get out and about, meet some local people and visit some local tourist attractions too |

Even before I arrived in America I had read up about Longwood Gardens, which I’d seen described as the world’s premier horticultural showplace, just the kind of place I would enjoy visiting and I wasn't wrong. |

The first day of a highly enjoyable visit to Washington DC had us visiting as many of the must see places as we could fit in. We didn't waste a single minute of our sightseeing day and loved playing tourists for the day. |

Our second day in America's capitol city saw us visiting the National Air and Space Museum and National Museum of the American Indian two of the most interesting museums I've ever visited with just so much to see and take in. |

When I discovered there was a place called Winterthur close to Wilmington I knew I just had to visit there. The reason being of course it’s the also the name of the city in Switzerland where our eldest son James and daughter-in-law Olivia live and we had only visited recently |

A visit to to the Colonial town of New Castle was like stepping back in time. Here I learnt how the state of Deleware was created when it seperated from Great Britain and Pennslyvania. A period of history I previously knew nothing about New Castle is well worth a visit and I really enjoyed my day there. |

A planned trip on the replica Kalmar Nickel tall ship didn't quite turn out as expected but was still a very enjoyable time. The following morning I just had time before heading back to Britain to visit the Delaware Art Museum to check out what treasures they had there. |

Wildmoor Heath is a nature reserve looked after by the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust. Here if you are lucky you will find the beautiful little Silver-studded Blue Butterflies if you know where to find them. Sadly the day I visited I wasn't so lucky but its such a rare environment it was well worth a visit. |
