Silver Birch Each spring is different and this year is certainly no exception. After another seemingly long winter with very low temperatures and for us here in the south east very little in the way of sunshine I would always try to get out with my camera if the weather was favourable. East Blean Wood is a place that never disappoints for a walk at anytime of the year, but especially as new life begins to stir, and over the course of late winter into spring I made several visits.
After such a lot of dull weather but very little rain the biggest surprise was when I found the first of the Lesser Celandine flowers blooming at the beginning of February. As I have taken pictures that record the progress of spring over many years I have a good idea when things will be in flower but this wee flower was a good two weeks earlier than I’d seen it in 2010. There is a favoured spot by the edge of the wood that gets any sunshine and this is where I found them. As Spring progressed of course it all seemed to come in such a rush with higher than normal temperatures this year bringing the leaves on the trees very quickly and so the woodland flowers had to get their flowering in very quickly to make the most of any light. The first Bluebell I found in flower was in Early April.
My problem really is that as much as I enjoy visiting these woods I have taken many hundreds of pictures of the years and so its hard to find something new to inspire taking pictures as I feel I’ve taken most of them before. But it will never stop me visiting, especially when the Bluebells are at their best. It’s such a fleeting spectacle that it’s easy to miss it, so a carefully timed visit is a must. The pictures that accompany this journal entry are just a small selection of the many I took during my visits. They also include a visit to Reculver to take in the sunset. There was a very good reason for this and that was I’d recently acquired a 9 stop Neutral Density Filter and was keen to see what I could do with it as the sun was setting across the sea. On the whole I was pleased with the images but a lot more experimentation will be needed to see what I can achieve with it.
